Why should I choose the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card over a bank card or credit card?
The PAYjr Visa Buxx Card is the only card that provides parents the ability to control how much money is available and monitor all the card transactions. And unlike check cards, the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card protects you from overdraft fees and lost or stolen money. Combine that with our online budgeting application and immediate access to your account information, and you're on your way to developing responsible financial habits.
How do I validate my checking or savings account as a Funding Account?
When you use a checking or savings account as a Funding Account, you will need to validate your account before you can load money to the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card. To do this:
- Review the activity in the checking or savings account you authorized us to debit.
- Locate the two debit transactions from "PAYjr, Inc. Debit".
- Return to www.payjr.com/payjr and follow the prompts to verify your Funding Account.
Validating your account helps protect your financial information and confirms that you wish to use this account to load funds to the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card.
Is identification required to use the card?
It's always a good idea to have identification, such as a school ID or driver's license, with you when you use the card. A merchant may request to see it, although it is not required to use the card. Be sure to sign your card so the merchant can verify your signature with the one on the receipt.
What is different about buying gas at the pump or paying inside the store?
When you use your PAYjr Visa Buxx Card to purchase gas, you should pay inside instead of at the pump. When you pay at the pump, the station will attempt to pre-authorize your card for the maximum amount they allow at the pump. If this is more than your available card balance then your card will be declined and the pre-authorized attempt will not be removed until the station settles their accounts at the end of the day. By paying inside, you determine the exact amount you want to apply to the card.

How do I activate the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card?
When your card arrives, you can activate it online at www.payjr.com/payjr or by phone at 1-800-409-8606. In either case you will need to provide the Parents birth date and social security number. Once you have completed the activation the card is available for use.

What is the difference between a prepaid card, a check card and a credit card?

How can Parents guide their Teens to the most appropriate places to
shop, especially online?
Parents can review a Teen’s card account anytime and see how much they are spending and where they are spending it. Parents can discuss with their Teens how and where the card can be used. Together, you and your Teen can agree on the best places to shop. But even more important is talking to your Teen about money and what you expect from them.
How does the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card work?
The PAYjr Visa Buxx Card is a prepaid, re-loadable spending card created especially for Teens. It can be used everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. Because it’s a prepaid card, spending limits are set by the amount of money Parents load onto the card. When a Teen makes a purchase with the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card, the purchase amount is deducted from the card balance. When the card balance is low, Parents can add money to, or reload the card from their credit or debit card or from a checking or savings account. Parents can even schedule automatic loads to provide an Allowance on a regular basis. It’s a perfect tool for Parents and Teens to talk about budgeting, spending and financial responsibility.

What happens if a merchant puts an item through without prior authorization?
Occasionally, a merchant does put an item through without prior authorization. If the purchase exceeds the available balance, your account will have a negative balance. In these rare circumstances, where an overdraft occurs, you can be notified to load more funds onto the card by setting up Alerts in the system online.
How do I know how much money is on the card?
There are several ways to keep track of the balance on your PAYjr Visa Buxx Card. Both the Parent and the Teen can check the card balance online at any time or by calling 1-800-409-8606 to retrieve the balance using the automated phone service. You can also set up email or mobile Alerts to be notified of the card balance.
Teens should also keep their receipts to compare them to the online statement as a way of understanding how much they are spending and where. It's a valuable budgeting exercise that teaches the value of money and increases awareness of the card balance, which is important when making a purchase.
Do merchants ever tie up more funds than your intended purchase price?
It is important to know that some merchants like restaurants and gas stations “reserve” more money than your Teen may actually plan to spend. They do this to cover variable costs like tips or a tank of gas. Within 3–7 days, the “reserve” is cancelled and the funds become available again on the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card.

Card Program Questions
Is the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card a credit card?
No. The PAYjr Visa Buxx Card is actually a prepaid card.
While a prepaid card looks similar to a credit card, you do not have a line of credit and can only use the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card to access funds loaded onto the card by Parents. However, to a merchant the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card functions in many ways like any other spending card. Merchants process spending card authorizations and PAYjr Visa Buxx Card authorizations in the same manner.
Is the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card a debit card?
The PAYjr Visa Buxx Card is similar to a debit card in that the spending power is limited by the amount of funds loaded onto the card, and the available balance is debited with each transaction. However, unlike a check or debit card, the PAYjr Visa Buxx Card does not access a traditional bank account or require the Cardholder to set up a banking relationship.
What are the differences between what the Parents can do and what the Teen can do?
Parents are the only ones who can add money to the card directly from their bank account. Additionally only Parents can order a new card or reactivate a card account. The Teen’s name is embossed on the card. Separately a Teen can choose to set up a Direct Deposit from their employer.
Both the Parent and the Teenager will have access to the transaction
detail online, and can access the available Alerts and other functions
on the site. The Parent, being the only user with access to the Load
process, will be the only user with direct access to the details about
the load process and the funding account details.
How many cards can I order?
You may order one card for each Teen for whom you have legal guardianship. The card will be mailed to your credit card billing address with the initial load amount already on the card.
To get a PAYjr Visa Buxx Card for another Teen, login to your account and select Manage Family then Add a Child. If the Child is already
enrolled in a PAYjr program, you can upgrade them by selecting Manage Family then Get a Card.
Is it possible to spend more than is on the card?
No. You only have access to funds on your PAYjr Visa Buxx Card. However, if the Teen knows the available balance before making a purchase, then the Teen or their Parent can request to pay the remaining balance of the purchase with cash, check, or a credit or
check card. Parents and Teens can find out the available balance by
logging into the PAYjr Chore and Allowance Management System website or using a mobile
phone.
PAYjr Visa Buxx Card and can only be used to make purchases up to
the available balance on the card. Most merchants send a
pre-authorization for the amount of the transaction to ensure that the
funds needed to cover the transaction are available within the card
account. If a Teenager makes a purchase for an amount that is higher
than the available balance in the card account, the transaction is
declined. However, some businesses, such as gas stations, send a
pre-authorization for a different amount than the actual charge only to
ensure the account is active. If your Teenager only has enough funds in
her card account for the pre-authorized amount, the transaction will
not be declined and an overdraft may occur once the final amount of the
transaction is deducted from the Teen's PAYjr Visa Buxx Card.
For example, if the Teenager purchases gasoline, a pre-authorization
for $1 can sometimes be sent to ensure the account is open. The actual
amount to be charged to the Teen's PAYjr Visa Buxx Card is not determined until the Teenager has finished pumping the gasoline. If the Teenager's card account does not have enough funds to pay for the completed purchase, even if the transaction was pre-authorized, an overdraft can occur. PAYjr recommends that Parents instruct their Teens to pay inside at gas stations to avoid these overdraft scenarios.
An overdraft may also occur due to the posting of a fee for a
transaction performed at an ATM, such as balance inquiry or cash
withdrawal, or the posting of an Account Service Fee, such as a
customer service call. If a Teenager's PAYjr Visa Buxx Card
account is overdrawn, an Overdraft Fee may be assessed. For fee
amounts, refer to the
Cardholder Agreement.
